Soundtrax: Episode 2025-10
September & October 2025

By Randall D. Larson

Feature Interview:

Penka D. Kouneva: Scoring APPLEWOOD: HOUSE OF SECRETS

Penka D. Kouneva – I’m super-excited to announce the release of the original soundtrack “APPLEWOOD: House of Secrets” on the Notefornote Music label. I invited and collaborated on APPLEWOOD with a young, exceptionally gifted film composer, Deniz Aktas. The film is a haunting ghost story/family drama that takes place in current times and in the late 19th Century in the South, calling for a lush, expressive orchestral score in the tradition of Philippe Sarde’s “Ghost Story.” I’m forever grateful to Paul J. Salamoff, Rob Hollocks, and Amy Bailey for this opportunity, and to Bryon Davis and Peter Hackman for releasing the soundtrack. The film is available on VOD, and I highly recommend it - it boasts great characters, drama, and a riveting story, all set against beautiful visuals. (Story: A young widow’s latent psychic powers reveal dark secrets inside a Victorian mansion, forcing her to solve its mysteries before it takes her sanity and her life.)
The film was released in 2022, but its soundtrack was just released by Notefornote Music recently in 2025:
Available from Spotify, Amazon and Apple Music

Q: What brought you into scoring APPLEWOOD, and how did you come to work together with Deniz Aktas on this project?

Penka D. Kouneva: I’ve known the director, Rob Hollocks, for eight years. He was the executive producer on ENCOUNTER (2018, Sci-Fi Drama), which my dear friend Paul Salamoff wrote and directed. Rob Hollocks has been collaborating with Amy Bailey, a screenwriter and producer based in Georgia, for a couple of years on several projects. APPLEWOOD was our first major collaboration, following ENCOUNTER by Paul Salamoff, and since then, we’ve worked on four other films. I really loved the story of APPLEWOOD! The story of a thriving family with two beautiful daughters that gets torpedoed by an evil person resonated with me because that echoed my own family history. I was also inspired by supernatural storytelling, and the genre of ghost movies. In “Applewood,” there’s an angry ghost, Lucy, who inhabits this mansion, seeking vengeance.

Rob Hollocks gave me a clear musical direction. The film takes place in modern times and continually switches back to late 19th century. The present-day protagonist is a widow - Kaitlyn. She’s lost her husband in one of the recent wars, and to honor his memory she goes to renovate his Victorian mansion. Kaitlyn’s music is sad and melancholy. Kaitlyn discovers that she has psychic powers - she has the ability to see the past in her mind’s eye, when she touches objects from the past. In Act 1, little by little, Kaitlyn discovers her supernatural powers. As a parallel storyline, the 19th-century family drama is unfolding. In Act 2, we spend more time in the 19th Century, gaining insight into the family dynamics. For the 19th-century storyline, Rob Hollocks wanted a melodic, emotional, thematic score - in the tradition of Jerry Goldsmith and Christopher Young.

I decided to bring on Deniz Aktas, a prodigiously gifted young composer and expert in orchestral music and in orchestral samples, modern scoring techniques and soundtrack production. Deniz has both the musicality and the production chops for such a big modern score. I needed to work with him because in the fall of 2021 I was also scoring the Netflix animated series DRAGON AGE ABSOLUTION. I composed the themes and cues for APPLEWOOD and Deniz helped programming my cues and composing variations and additional cues to achieve thematically cohesive score. We recorded the strings live with the Moscow orchestra, and we also used a wealth of samples, including percussion, brass, and string effects.

Q: What was your process of spotting music for the episodes?

Penka D. Kouneva: I came up with the Main Titles theme in the summer of 2021, and I let that theme live in my mind for a couple of months, because I was busy scoring DRAGON AGE ABSOLUTION. The entire score is thematic - a lot of the music is deconstruction (culling out motifs), variations, and repurposing of that Main theme. We also decided that for the antagonist – the son-in-law, Marcus – we would use only percussion, and we would approach the strings as a colorless, percussive instrument. Since the score is so melody and harmony based, I thought, let’s treat the bad guy as a percussive instrument. He does get strings, but they’re all playing like Bartok, chong-chong-chong-chong-chong marcatos, spiky notes. Also, the two sisters needed joyful music for the flashbacks in Act 1 that show them as a cohesive family, in the tradition of Little Women by Thomas Newman.

The score had lots of variations of the thematic material. In addition, there are numerous suspenseful moments featuring string textures, unnerving “aleatorics,” percussive hits, and spiky stingers typical for scoring horror and ghost stories. Another great inspiration was the classic GHOST STORY, the 1981 Universal release, which I absolutely loved. The story is riveting, suspenseful, and touching. The score was composed by the French composer Phillipe Sarde - a lush, melancholy, emotional, European score. I was struck by the opening montage, which is an aerial shot of a frozen winter landscape in New England, and the music was so melancholy and emotional. I started with that image and emotion in mind to craft a score in the tradition of the Angry Ghost genre.

Q: Your cue for IT APPROACHES is quite a powerful and riveting piece of music – what can you tell me about how you created this track?

Penka D. Kouneva: That was Marcus’ theme: percussion, loud pounding drum-drum-drum-drum-drum. Marcus is the bad guy, so the music has to delineate him and distinguish, musically, his persona from the Little Women/Philippe Sarde lush romantic style for the family.

Q: Would you describe the process by which musicians, or which orchestra, was brought in to create the music?

Penka D. Kouneva: Our producer, Amy Rhinehart Bailey, funded a string recording with the Moscow Strings (Vlad Podgoretsky), so we could record 30 minutes of music - the meaty, melodic emotional cues. The brass, percussion, woodwinds, choir, and all the string effects are samples. We chose to record the cues with notes and melodies, and we retained all the clusters, textures, string effects, and string orchestral designs on samples.

Q: Did you work in the Music Department in configuring the music and working with additional music or with an orchestrator, and/or music editor?

Penka D. Kouneva: The Music Department was Deniz and me. He finished the cues, and I orchestrated all the music for the scoring sessions. (No music editor on a low-budget film.) I am grateful to Rob Hollocks because he is the kind of director who always has a clear musical vision of what he wants. We began with a shared understanding of what the musical style was going to be. Once I start composing and delivering videos with my score, he approved the entire score with only two-three revisions. Every collaboration with him since has been like this: we’ve established a clear understanding of what the palette is going to be like, the musical styles, the density, the spotting. Once I start delivering the actual score, he literally approves the entire feature film score with, like, three tweaks. This is an incredibly gratifying collaborative process for me as a film composer, and I cherish working with directors like Rob.

Q: What was most challenging about scoring this project?

Penka D. Kouneva: Juggling APPLEWOOD simultaneously with the other super-gigantic scoring job, Netflix’s DRAGON AGE ABSOLUTION series, both with complicated deliverables. I brought in Deniz because of his talent and expertise, and because I needed help with the deliverables – printing the audio files, composing additional cues, doing variations of my cues, coming up with his own textures for the suspenseful moments, and helping me deliver an 80-minute horror score. I feel passionate about opening doors for young, exquisite talents. It’s my honor to give Deniz Aktas a co-composer credit – this is his first feature soundtrack release.

Many thanks for your time, Penka, for facilitating this interview!

Each artist was given the freedom to reinterpret classic Scooby-Doo cues with their signature style — resulting in a soundtrack that feels at once familiar and surprising.
“I grew up watching Scooby-Doo, so being part of this project felt like reconnecting with something nostalgic from my childhood,” says SwuM. “I tried to keep the playful energy of Scooby-Doo but translated it into a relaxed, dreamy lo-fi atmosphere. I used warm textures, jazzy chords, and a steady laid-back groove to capture that mood. If Scooby and the gang were listening to my song, I picture them cruising down a quiet road at night, calm before the chaos of their next mystery.”
The Scooby-Doo LoFi Soundtrack is more than just a remix project — it’s a celebration of cultural continuity. For over five decades, Scooby-Doo has remained a staple of childhoods worldwide, with its instantly recognizable characters, humor, and sense of adventure. At the same time, lofi has exploded as one of the defining genres of the streaming era, soundtracking the daily lives of millions. By fusing these worlds, the Lofi Scooby-Doo soundtrack transforms into something greater: a cross-generational bridge, tapping into childhood nostalgia while also resonating with today’s lofi listeners. It’s music for late nights, lazy afternoons, and, of course, for the month-long celebration of all things Scooby-Doo during Scoobtober. With contributions from some of the most respected names in lofi, the Scooby-Doo LoFi Soundtrack is set to be a highlight of Scoobtober. Fans can look forward to cozy, atmospheric reinterpretations that honor the original material while pushing it into exciting new territory.

Milan Records announces the September 12 release of THE LONG WALK (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) featuring music by multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and composer JEREMIAH FRAITES of THE LUMINEERS. Marking his first-ever feature film score, the album includes original music crafted by Fraites for director Francis Lawrence’s upcoming thriller, which is based on Stephen King’s debut novel about a group of men locked in a deadly walking competition. Introducing the album today is lead single “The Long Walk,” a bold, tension-filled number punctuated by pizzicato strings, choral vocals and crescendoing synthwork.  Of the soundtrack, JEREMIAH FRAITES says, “I’m beyond proud to have composed the score for The Long Walk, Francis Lawrence’s adaptation of Stephen King’s 1979 novel. Getting to work with Francis has been an absolute dream come true—I’ve been a huge fan of his films for as long as I can remember. My goal was to create music that not only heightened the horror elements but also honored the deeply human, coming-of-age heart of the story. This project has been one of the most inspiring and rewarding experiences of my career.”
Having previously worked with Francis Lawrence for the director’s Hunger Games films, Fraites began the scoring process for The Long Walk long before production began, sending early ideas to Lawrence that were later used on-set throughout filming. The pair identified early on that music would need to play a crucial role in conveying not only the brutality of the onscreen competition but also the deeply human exploration of friendship and resilience at the heart of the narrative. Capturing the visceral violence of the competition are hauntingly propulsive numbers accentuated with driving percussive instrumentation, inventive glissandos and electronic synthwork, an echo of the grueling, step-by-step race the boys are forced to endure. As the journey continues and bonds are forged between the competitors, these moments are offset by heart-wrenching orchestral movements often integrating strains of a sweetly angelic boys’ choir to reflect the intimately raw and authentic bonds of brotherhood and resilience. The result is a uniquely distinct soundscape that captures the rawness of the film while powerfully underscoring its emotional resonance.
ABOUT THE LONG WALK: From the highly anticipated adaptation of master storyteller Stephen King’s first-written novel, and Francis Lawrence, the visionary director of The Hunger Games franchise films (Catching Fire, Mockingjay – Pts. 1 & 2, and The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes), comes The Long Walk, an intense, chilling, and emotional thriller that challenges audiences to confront a haunting question: how far could you go? Jeremiah Fraites is a co-founder, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist of the GRAMMY-nominated, multi-platinum band The Lumineers. In 2025, Fraites continues expanding his artistic voice, stepping into the world of film scoring with collaborations alongside acclaimed filmmakers Scott Cooper and Francis Lawrence. His original score for Cooper’s Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere will arrive in theaters via 20th Century Studios on October 24, 2025, following his work on Lionsgate’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Long Walk. These projects mark the beginning of a bold new chapter for Fraites, bringing his narrative instincts, orchestral writing, and emotional depth to an entirely new audience.

Lakeshore Records releases AMERICANA—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on  September 5 with an original score by Emmy-winning composer David Fleming [(2025),  THE LAST OF US (2023) and MR. & MRS. SMITH (2024)]. Starting with an orchestra recorded in Nashville, Fleming embraces country and western music with his use of dulcimers, pedal steel guitar, mandolin, fiddle, vintage piano and electric bass, creating a richly atmospheric score steeped in vintage American musical traditions. Michael Geiger’s deep vocalizations further anchor the vivid soundscapes throughout. The neo-western crime thriller released by Lionsgate starring Sydney Sweeney and Paul Walter Hauser is in theaters now.
A gallery of dynamic characters clash over the possession of a rare Native American artifact in this wildly entertaining modern-day western. After the artifact falls onto the black market, a shy waitress with big dreams (Sydney Sweeney) teams up with a lovelorn military veteran (Paul Walter Hauser) to gain possession of it, putting them in the crosshairs of a ruthless criminal (Eric Dane) working on behalf of a Western antiquities dealer (Simon Rex). Bloodshed ensues when others join the battle, including the leader of an indigenous group (Zahn McClarnon) and a desperate woman fleeing her mysterious past (Halsey). Notes Fleming: “Creating the score for ‘Americana’ meant a full immersion into the deep and beautiful world of country and western music, including a trove of albums and scores that inspired our writer & director, Tony Tost. While the score is grounded in the tradition of country music decades old, I also sought to evoke the feeling of a truly ancient old west, full of ghosts and mystery. To help me achieve this, the late Michael Geiger's brilliant, gravelly bass voice acts as the narrator for the score. Adding strains of pedal steel guitar and an orchestra recorded in Nashville, I came away from this film with a profound respect for this musical culture and the tradition of storytelling that it is seeped in.”

MovieScore Media offers TAFITI: ACROSS THE DESERT scored by Carsten Rocker. The original score from the 2025 animated adventure feature film directed by Nina Wels, featuring the voice of Cosima Henman, Dustin Semmelrogge and Bürger Lars Dietrich, produced by Tradewind Pictures, Red Parrot Studios and Little Dream Entertainment, released by Little Dream Pictures (Germany) and Paradis Films (France). THE STORY: Tafiti, a young meerkat, initially rejects friendship with Bristles, a bush pig. When his grandpa is bitten by a snake Tafiti sets off to find the flower for the cure. Bristles wants to prove that adventures are always better with friends. THE SCORE: “Composing the music for Tafiti has been a truly special journey – one that began with scoring the very first trailer and early animatics, and culminated, almost three years later, in recording sessions with the Staatskapelle Weimar and wonderful soloists. Even while working on other projects during that time, Tafiti never really left me. It grew into an inspiring collaboration with director Nina Wels and gave me the rare opportunity to follow my passion: writing a richly orchestrated adventure score – while also exploring very different musical colors along the way. The soundtrack brings together a wide range of themes: a simple three-note motif for Tafiti himself; a warm, guitar-and-charango based theme for his friendship with Bristles; and above all, a sweeping emotional theme for the search for the Blue Flower, reaching its climax in “Farewell and Flying Home”. There’s also the recurring travel theme (“End Titles/Bristles and Tafiti Theme”), set in 5/8 and carried by vocals, ukulele, and percussion, as well as the intimate “Opapa’s Theme”, shifting between solo violin and clarinet. So many themes, so many styles – composing this music has truly been a dream come true.” –  Carsten Rocker THE COMPOSER: Carsten Rocker is a freelance music producer and composer based in Cologne. He studied music in Oldenburg and at California State University Long Beach (Los Angeles), where he focused on film scoring and conducting. In recent years, Rocker has composed for television series such as DIE ROSENHEIM-COPS (ZDF), IN ALLER FREUNDSCHAFT (ARD) and DIE SEENOTRETTER (NDR), as well as for feature films including the animated movie TAFITI – ACROSS THE DESERT and documentaries like Bernhard Hoetger: ZWISCHEN DEN WELTEN. His work also includes TV documentaries such as ROADTRIP 1945 (ZDF) and scores for numerous episodes of TERRA X and LESCHS KOSMOS (both ZDF). Lakeshore Records releases THE GIRLFRIEND - Prime Video Original Series Soundtrack digitally, featuring music by composer Ruth Barrett (The Terminal List: Dark Wolf). Barrett’s score inhabits two main themes—an acoustic series of soundscapes for the character Laura and a more modern electronic backdrop for the character Cherry. As the dramatic story progresses, the score becomes darker and crosses over into a more unhinged territory. The Girlfriend starring Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke is streaming worldwide now on Prime Video.
Based on Michelle Frances’ novel of the same name, The Girlfriend follows Laura (Wright), a woman who seemingly has it all: a glittering career, a loving husband, and her precious son, Daniel. Her perfect life begins to unravel when Daniel brings home Cherry (Cooke), a girlfriend who changes everything. After a tense introduction, Laura becomes convinced Cherry is hiding something. Is she a manipulative social climber, or is Laura just paranoid? The truth is a matter of perspective. Notes Barrett: "Creating two distinct soundscapes for Laura and Cherry was a fun challenge. Laura’s sound is acoustic and shaman-like, with a touch of the 60s/70s. Cherry’s sound, on the other hand, is electronic, cheeky and processed, featuring mad vocal glitchy effects. As the album progresses, the two worlds collide, becoming increasingly dark, psychological, and chaotic.”

Lakeshore Records and Invada Records are set to release RABBIT TRAP—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally today, September 12, featuring original music and score by Lucrecia Dalt (The Baby)Dalt creates intense soundscapes that are at once seductive and horrific, blurring the lines between score and sound design to create a hypnotically immersive and ominous sonic experience The Magnet release produced by SpectreVision, written and directed by Bryn Chainey and starring Dev Patel, Rosy McEwen and Jade Croot is in theaters now.  Notes Dalt: “One of the most gratifying aspects was diving into the sound and technology of the 1970s—immersing myself in gear and techniques I had never deeply explored before, from the raw power of vintage synths to the hypnotic chaos and rewarding magic of tape machines. I also had the unique task of composing both the film’s score and the music that the character creates within the story, layering complexity upon complexity. Bryn is a director who instinctively pushes you beyond the known; ‘go further,’ I remember him saying many times—and this simple command became a catalyst to delve deeper into my own subconscious, where borders blur and the mind breaks down, appropriately accompanying the characters in their own delirium. A necessary state for me when making music, because once there, I felt I could delve and surrender to the universe of the film, where land and mind psychologies intertwine.”
ABOUT LUCRECIA DALT: Dalt, born in Pereira, Colombia, was raised in a family of music enthusiasts. Moving to Berlin, she developed her distinctive, adventurous sound. Her work has spun into increasingly accomplished terrains with ANTICLINES (2018) and NO ERA SÓLIDA (2020), and notably, ¡AY! Dalt’s 2022 breakthrough sci-fi bolero album. Along the way, Dalt expanded her practice into original scoring for television, HBO’s THE BABY (2022) series, and films like ON BECOMING A GUINEAFOWL (2024), while creating sound installations and performances that showcase her luminous modulations and distinctive, evolving vocal approach.

THE THREESOME (Keegan DeWitt) Original score from the 2021 horror feature film directed by Chad Hartigan, starring Zoey Deutch, Jonah Hauer-King and Ruby Cruz.
THE STORY: When a young man’s crush leads him into an unexpected threesome, he thinks it’s his ultimate fantasy come true. But when the fantasy ends, all three are left with sobering consequences, forcing them to be responsible for their actions.
THE SCORE: “Chad and I first met at the age of 17. As so many do at the age, we bonded over our favorite songs, records and films. We couldn’t have been more different, and continue to be, but something was seeded then that now allows us to often collaborate without a lot of explaining.  He simply told me he wanted this film to transcend period and genre, and instead play as a genuine portrayal of flawed people doing their best, and often failing with comical results. Instantly we flashed to the romantic comedies and dramas of the 80s and 90s, filled with incredible actors who weren’t perfect, who often did the wrong thing and constantly challenged us to like them. Characters a lot like all of us. I was inspired by the romantic sweeping scores of 1960s Italy featuring Monica Vitti. They were steeped in sex and wit and had undeniable melodies that took a crowbar to your heart. As I sat at the piano the score had been waiting for me. On my simple upright, which you hear in actual iPhone Voice Memos on tracks such as ‘The End’, ‘The Threesome’ and ‘A New Reality’, there was this aching melody that spoke to the childishness of young love, 20s lust and then the rude awakening and realizations of adulthood, always arriving quicker than we expect it. This intimacy also connected with the raw and drifting sound of Manchester New Wave in our dancing scenes or the unravelling percussive spirals of our action scenes. I am deeply proud of this film in that I think it spans eras and will only be appreciated more with time. Chad’s cinematic voice, in my opinion, is a rare one of belief in the human heart and its ability to transcend and connect people, either in folly, in sacrifice or in trust. I hope this score does something to join in that spirit.” – Keegan DeWitt Release date: September 12, 2025.

Netflix has released the much-anticipated BLACK RABBIT (Soundtrack from the Netflix Series), featuring a powerful original score by genre-defying composers Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans. Building on their distinctive style, Bensi and Jurriaans take a bold step forward with a score that is both gripping and deeply immersive, for Netflix’s upcoming psychological thriller, premiering September 18. known for their genre-defying scores on OZARK and THE GIFT, Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans return with a visceral new original soundtrack for Netflix’s upcoming psychological thriller BLACK RABBIT. Set against the pulsating backdrop of New York City’s nocturnal underworld, Bensi and Jurriaans channel their deep roots in the city’s music scene to craft a score that is as volatile, unfiltered, and emotionally charged as the story itself. Blending distorted horns, and raw, improvised textures, their score pushes sonic boundaries to mirror the descent of brothers Vince (Jason Bateman) and Jake (Jude Law) into the chaos of ambition, identity, and survival. The result is a haunting and hypnotic musical experience that doesn’t just underscore the narrative, it pulses through its veins. The composers share: “For the Black Rabbit score we built a palette of destroyed horns, garbage can percussion, mangled rock bands, found sounds and blown out analog synthesizers. The music is a propulsive, syncopated, chaotic march to a story that spirals down with increasing inertia. Along the way there are faint glimmers of emotion but always weighted with an undercurrent of dread.” The soundtrack is available now on all major digital platforms:

Milan Records has announced the September 26 release of ELEANOR THE GREAT (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), featuring music written by award-winning composer DUSTIN O’HALLORAN for Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut. Starring June Squibb as Eleanor, a 94-year-old woman who, in the wake of a devastating loss, shares a story that takes on a dangerous life of its own, the film required a soundscape as introspective and emotionally nuanced as its narrative. A longtime admirer of O’Halloran’s solo piano work, Johansson immediately approached the composer for the film, the duo working in close collaboration during the filming process to craft a sonic throughline to the deeply human story. The resulting score features delicately lyrical solo piano movements punctuated by stirring orchestral suites that perfectly capture the film’s exploration of grief, identity and the need for human connection. Making its debut alongside album preorder is lead single “Memories,” a delicately moving and evocative piano track that reflects the measured poignancy at the heart of O’Halloran’s compositions – listen here. Following its worldwide premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, ELEANOR THE GREAT debuted in theaters Friday, September 26 from Sony Pictures Classics.  Of the score, composer Dustin O’halloran says, “It was such a pleasure working on Scarlett’s first directorial film. From our first meetings we knew we both wanted this to capture the heart of the story without an overpowering score. There are so many layers of emotion in the film, including June Squibb’s inspiring performance, that I was able to draw on, and I tried to create something that would move the characters in the most empathic way. Many of the piano performances were simply me recording while watching the picture, playing and improvising with it to create a feeling that the viewer was inside the performance. It’s rare to have the opportunity to create a score like this, and I’m grateful for the trust Scarlett gave me.”
“The first time I ever heard Dustin’s piano solos, I said to myself that if I ever had the opportunity to direct a film, I would want him to do the composition for it,” adds director Scarlett Johansson. “It was literally a dream come true for me to hear that Dustin wanted to compose our score and I told him that verbatim. As I was putting the director’s cut together, I laid in some temporary tracks. Most of them were piano pieces by classical composers such as Chopin, Debussy, Satie. I didn’t realize that Dustin had composed some of his own albums as love letters to these very composers, so the references were all second nature to him, they lived inside him already. The entire way through from start to finish, it felt like Dustin, and I were thinking and creating with the same creative brain and same creative heart.”
About ELEANOR THE GREAT: In ELEANOR THE GREAT, June Squibb brings to vivid life the witty and proudly troublesome 94-year-old Eleanor Morgenstein, who after a devastating loss, tells a tale that takes on a dangerous life of its own. Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut is a comically poignant exploration of how the stories we hear become the stories we tell.

Composer Jared DePasquale has released his latest score for his audio drama series, The Jake Muller Adventures.  “It’s an ex-military character that now runs a private security company, but he finds himself in all sorts of bizarre situations,” DePasquale says. “The stories are always interesting and serious, but the character himself resembles some of what we came to see in the 80's (tough guys / funny one liners). This particular adventure had our character in the bayou investigating potential zombie sightings, and I was able to hire two great fiddle players in Nashville, as well as some other instrumentalists, and I got to play some dobro.”
