Soundtrax: Episode 2025-11

November 2025

By Randall D. Larson

Feature Interview: Sarah Schachner

Q: You started with Dan Trachtenberg with PREY in 2022. What can you tell me about scoring PREY?

Sarah Schachner: When Dan reached out about a Predator story set in the 1700s, it was an instant yes for me. I loved the idea of telling Naru’s emotional journey and her incredible growth through music, all within that classic hunt-or-be-hunted framework. The 1700s Great Plains setting also opened up a lot of room to do something unique and really tailored to that story.

Q: With BADLANDS serving as a self-contained entry in the PREDATOR series, how did you begin to create the music for the characters and situations of the new film?

Sarah Schachner: The first thing I wrote was actually the Partnership Theme. I had just gone to screen the film with Dan Trachtenberg, and the next day the theme came to me almost fully formed. It doesn’t always happen like that, but I’m grateful when it does. The unlikely bond between a Predator and a legless synthetic had such a strong emotional pull and I followed what that made me feel. That was my starting point. The sound of Dek learning to let his guard down and realizing the strength in connection and trust. From there, I started shaping the sound of Dek’s home planet, with the vocoder chants, and eventually the sound of Genna itself.

Q: What did Dan Trachtenberg have in mind for the new film?

Sarah Schachner: When we were first starting, Dan mentioned a score I had done for a video game called Anthem. I had used a vocoder in that score and he was interested in exploring something like that for Badlands. He also wanted to incorporate the Yautja language into the score, which was an interesting challenge considering the language is mostly made up of aggressive guttural sounds and clicks! I found a few phrases that sounded right and created some lyrical themes along the lines of “Go forth into the stars” and “Go forth and kill.” The chants almost function as ancestral mantras for Dek throughout the film.

Q: What was your process of spotting music for the film?

Sarah Schachner: We actually never spotted the film in the traditional sense. Dan prefers to react to music rather than give too much direction upfront. I usually start by writing thematic material away from picture. I like to write to the spirit of the film first, to capture the essence of the characters and emotional tone while I’m still in that early impression stage. Once the thematic DNA and sonic world-building start to fall into place, it becomes easier to shape everything to picture. Dan is also a very creative and hands-on director when it comes to music to picture, so our process tends to be really collaborative and non-linear.

Q: What was your instrumental palette for the new film – and what did the project’s budget permit?

Sarah Schachner: The score features a handful of custom sounds and instruments with a backdrop of support from strings, primal percussion, and occasional brass. The vocoder chanting and vocal textures were a big focus of the score. I experimented with vocoding other instruments as well, like violin, flute, and even mandolin. There’s a recurring motif when Dek is preparing his tools that came from a 3-D printed triple barrel flute played through a vocoder. The planet of Genna features a lot of experimental synth design as well as bursts of orchestral power. The emotional moments lean into intimate string themes and soft brass.

Q: What instruments and musicians have you brought in to give PREDATOR: BADLANDS its musical textures?

Sarah Schachner: Most of what you hear, I performed myself. I played violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, synthesizers, and performed all of the vocals. Most of the score is non-orchestral, but I did record with a 70-piece orchestra for additional layers of power.

Q: What new characters were involved in BADLANDS, how did you treat them musically?

Sarah Schachner: For the sound of our protagonist, Dek - I balanced the ancestral Yautja chanting with moments of powerful brass - mirroring the brutally respected hunter he wants to be seen as. He also has a fun kickass motif that pops up throughout the film as he gains confidence on Genna. Thia has a pretty quirky theme that reflects her relentlessly positive and effervescent personality. In the film, it interacts with a “Grumpy Dek” version of it when they first meet. We joked throughout the process that her theme kind of represents every annoying person in Dek’s life. The bond that evolves between the two of them has its own theme (The Partnership) that builds throughout the film from very small and intimate to grand and powerful. Tessa’s theme is vocal and has a bit of a heavier undertone that evolves throughout the film. I used an 8-note polychord to represent the planet of Genna itself. It has an otherworldly sound that feels like tension held in perfect balance.

Q: What was most unique, most distinctive, or most challenging about scoring this project?

Sarah Schachner: The film covers a surprising amount of emotional range. It’s action packed, epic, violent, yet quite funny and emotional at the same time. Dialing in that careful balance of sensitivity and humor with aggression and intensity was a unique challenge to this project. It was also important that underneath it all, there was always a wink of levity to let the audience know it’s ok to laugh and have fun. The music is intense, but it’s never taking itself too seriously.

Q: As the film progresses, what musical cues were particularly intriguing for you and your music, without any spoilers for the audience?

Sarah Schachner: I really enjoyed the final battle scene on Genna because it merges together many of the motifs and themes established earlier, while also developing some further. As intense and aggressive as it gets, it also has moments of sensitivity.

Q: What is coming up next for you, that you might be able to mention?

Sarah Schachner: Nothing I can talk about publicly yet, but I’m in the middle of a solo album as well as a collaboration album with my partner. After the whirlwind of Badlands, I’m very excited to get back to all of this music I’ve been incubating for the past year outside of my scoring work.

Many thanks to Sarah Schachner and Alix Becq-Weinstein and RHAPSODY PR for providing this interview!

With THE OVAL PORTRAIT, composer Andrew Morgan Smith has created the original score from the 2025 thriller feature film, directed by Adrian Langley, starring Simon Phillips, Louisa Capulet and Paul Thomas, produced by Grimehouse and released by Blue Fox Entertainment (USA). THE STORY: A thief, artist, and shopkeeper are pulled into the orbit of a haunted portrait connected to a vengeful ghost. THE SCORE: “When Adrian Langley approached me to score The Oval Portrait the task seemed daunting: “What if a Waxman, Korngold, or Bernstein scored this movie? Bring these old sensibilities back to sell that we’re making a throwback film.” The one thing I did know, if one director was deadly serious about intention and style it’ll be Adrian Langley. What followed was truly an amazing compositional experience. Afterall it’s not every day that you’re asked to make music of this scope and style. Truly letting loose and exploring this genre of music that we so rarely get to play with was a pleasure. Thankfully, Langley prioritized using live musicians on this score. Knowing the style we were going for, we both knew that we had to record it with real musicians. All the imperfections that come with working with live players help to sell the style and genre of the movie. The whole team loved working on this score, Andrew Osano the orchestrator did a superb job realizing the vision of the score. Robin Birner did an equally amazing job on the score mix as well as the album master. I hope you enjoy this glimpse into old school film music as much as we did creating it.” – Andrew Morgan Smith

MovieScore Media presents its first collaboration with Joseph Trapanese (THE WITCHER, OBLIVION, the DIVERGENT series) in this stylish horror score co-written with Jason Lazarus: THE RITUAL, from the recent film starring Al Pacino. THE RITUAL offers an original score from the 2025 horror feature film directed by David Midell, starring Al Pacino, Dan Stevens and Ashley Greene. The Story: Two priests, one in crisis with his faith and the other confronting a turbulent past, must overcome their differences to perform a risky exorcism. The Score: “The heart of THE RITUAL lies in its exploration of grief and the fragile journey toward rediscovering faith after losing all hope. From the beginning, we knew we were being asked to write music for something deeply human, and that meant approaching the score with humility. To capture the film’s late-1920s setting, we built a palette centered on strings, organ, and heavily transformed recordings of church bells. We had initially planned to avoid any modern electronics, but the Ondes Martenot, an early electronic instrument invented the very same year the film takes place, proved irresistible. Its voice became an essential part of the score, blurring the line between the familiar and the uncanny. Much of the music comes from taking these raw sounds and reshaping them into something otherworldly. That tension, between the real and the altered, the earthly and the supernatural, mirrors one of the central questions of the film itself: are these events grounded in our world, or is something greater at play? For us, this score is more than accompaniment. It is a reflection of the film’s spiritual journey, and we hope it resonates with listeners long after the final frame fades.” – Joseph Trapanese & Jason Lazarus

Lakeshore Records has released REGRETTING YOU—Music from the Motion Picture digitally, featuring music by composer, producer, arranger and member of Bright Eyes, Nathaniel Walcott (THE FAULT IN OUR STARS). Walcott’s understated yet evocative score balances the vivid range of emotions experienced by the characters in the dramatic film from Paramount Pictures. Based on the bestselling book, REGRETTING YOU introduces audiences to Morgan Grant (Allison Williams) and her daughter Clara (Mckenna Grace) as they explore what’s left behind after a devastating accident reveals a shocking betrayal and forces them to confront family secrets, redefine love, and rediscover each other. REGRETTING YOU is a story of growth, resilience, and self-discovery in the aftermath of tragedy, also starring Dave Franco and Mason Thames with Scott Eastwood and Willa Fitzgerald and directed by Josh Boone with a screenplay by Susan McMartin, in theatres now.
Notes Walcott: “Having worked with Josh Boone and his wonderful team on five projects over the span of 12 years, we now have a deep level of trust between us and an almost unspoken understanding when it comes to the challenge of figuring out what a film needs musically.  Regretting You was no exception to this, as I was afforded the freedom to use my own voice and musical language and to work with a wide palette in terms of style and instrumentation in order to take the score in whatever direction necessary to tell this compelling story.  The experience was heightened and made all the more enjoyable by an exceptional cast and inspired performances.”

THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR: SEASON 2 (Hannes De Maeyer): Original score from the 2nd season of the 2023-2025 thriller series directed by Dries Vos, starring Hugh Dennis, Janine Duvitski and Sam Palladio, produced by Eagle Eye Drama, Channel 4 and Happy Duck Films, released by Starz (USA) and Channel 4 (UK). MovieScore Media reunites with Belgian composer Hannes De Maeyer on the release of the Season 2 music from thriller series THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR, featuring soprano solos by Jolien De Gendt and the Budapest Art Orchestra. THE STORY: A young couple move to an upscale neighborhood to start a family, but soon find themselves entangled in a complex web of desire and betrayal with their new neighbors. THE SCORE: “For season 2 of The Couple Next Door I wanted to expand the sound world we created in the first season, while giving it a new emotional focus. The series is still set in the same cul-de-sac, but with an entirely new cast of characters — and Mia at the center. For her, I composed a lullaby that became the new main theme of the season. In Season 1, voices played a crucial role — sometimes natural, sometimes heavily processed — and I wanted to continue that approach here. This time I introduced a new vocal color: the classical soprano. Jolien De Gendt sings Mia’s lullaby in several key moments, her voice adding an intimate yet timeless quality that contrasts with the darker, psychological undercurrents of the series. Around that anchor, I shaped a sound world that blends acoustic and electronic elements: fragile piano lines, subtle strings and organ chords merge with layered synth textures and sound design. My aim was always to stay close to the characters, capturing both their tenderness and the tension and unease of the story — as if the score itself were an unseen presence in the room.” – Hannes De Maeyer

Based on actual events, and terrible decisions, Varese Sarabande has announced the release of the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for ROOFMAN, featuring music by composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist Christopher Bear (GRIZZLY BEAR) with contributions from GRAMMY®-winning multi-instrumentalist Jon Natchez (THE WAR ON DRUGS). Milan Records announces the original motion picture soundtrack for François Ozon’s THE STRANGER (L’ÉTRANGER), featuring an original score by Kuwaiti composer and multidisciplinary artist, Fatima Al Qadiri, available October 29, 2025. The album will be available October 29 on digital platforms and accompanies the theatrical release in France of François Ozon’s haunting adaptation of Albert Camus’s legendary novel, presented in shimmering black-and-white cinematography by Manu Dacosse. Premiering at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, THE STRANGER has been hailed as one of Ozon’s most mature and sensorial works.
For Al Qadiri, the collaboration stemmed from a shared fascination with time, strangeness, and longing — and from the performance at the heart of the film: Benjamin Voisin was incredibly inspiring — the way he moves, his expressions, the shadows across his face. He seems to hover through his life, suspended between innocence and detachment. I wanted the music to mirror that feeling, to capture the quiet tension beneath his stillness and the anger simmering in Jamila’s presence.” Working closely with the film’s editor Clément Selitzki, Al Qadiri built a sound world that hovers between eras: a digital Kawala flute (‘the impossible Arabic flute’), a Cümbüs, Turkish plucked strings, a classical ensemble, clarinet, and warm synth textures that wrap each cue “like a blanket.” Themes trace the emotional contours of Camus’s story — from the tender motif of “La mère” to the darker tones of “Une cigarette” and the evolving romance of “La lettre de Marie.”

A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE Soundtrack From The Netflix Original Film, is available everywhere now. Academy Award® winning composer Volker Bertelmann (ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT, CONCLAVE) brings his signature blend of emotional depth, precision, and sonic experimentation to A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE, from Academy Award® winning director Kathryn Bigelow. Approaching the score with deliberate restraint, Bertelmann crafted a tense and textural soundscape that builds across the film’s narrative, from quiet psychological unease to a crescendo of moral and political reckoning. His palette of low woodwinds, brass swells, and deep bass pulses captures both the gravity of leadership and the fragility of human decision-making. Subtle synth layers and glissando phrases create a sense of rising tension, while handcrafted sound design elements merge seamlessly with the mix to heighten the film’s physical and emotional impact. The result is a score that’s both intimate and monumental, underscoring the escalating stakes of Bigelow’s story with Bertelmann’s trademark blend of restraint, humanity, and innovation. Bertelmann notes: “Working with Kathryn Bigelow on A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE  was wonderful. She gave me a lot of freedom to experiment but also had a clear vision of what the music should be like. It's an absolute privilege to be part of her film!”

Lakeshore Records has released THE WALKING DEAD: DEAD CITY SEASON TWO—Original Series Soundtrack digitally, featuring music by composer Ian Hultquist (ASSASSINATION NATION). Hultquist, who returns from scoring season one of AMC Networks’ THE WALKING DEAD: DEAD CITY, ups the level of atmospheric dread for season two with a foundation of dark synth work, heavily distorted bass and booming drums that evoke an increasingly chaotic post-apocalyptic Manhattan. The series, starring Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, is streaming now on AMC+.
The Walking Dead: Dead City follows the popular Maggie (Cohan) and Negan (Morgan) characters traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror. In season two, in the growing war for control of Manhattan, Maggie and Negan find themselves trapped on opposite sides. As their paths intertwine, they come to see that the way out for both is more complicated and harrowing than they ever imagined.
Notes Hultquist: Season two of Dead City is bigger and badder than the first, which meant writing a score that could follow suit. It was a great opportunity to expand our characters’ themes from season one, as well as writing some new ones. More distortion, more drums and more chaos all come into play as our story takes off. There are some incredible action pieces that take place throughout the season, which really gave me an opportunity to push my writing on the score for the show to new heights. One of my favorites is the 8-minute-long action sequence “Attack on the Hudson River.” We’ve also got a new theme for our big bad character of the season, Bruegel. It’s a mix of dark, fuzzed-out bass mixed with propulsive drum beats & melting piano notes. I’m really proud of my work on this season of Dead City, and am over the moon to be able to release the soundtrack for fans of the show to enjoy!”

Milan Records today releases two albums of music from HEDDA, including both an original score by Academy Award-, Golden Globe-, Emmy- and GRAMMY-winning composer Hildur Guðnadóttir and an album of cover songs produced by Guðnadóttir and performed by the film’s cast. A bold reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s classic play by director Nia DaCosta, Hedda prompted Guðnadóttir to craft a soundscape inspired by avant-garde composer Cornelius Cardew and his radical “Scratch Orchestra.” Infusing the music with the same spirit of communal experimentation, Hildur Guðnadóttir utilized both professional musicians and contributions from on-set actors and crew members throughout the score. Layered with lively jazz movements, propulsive percussion and sampled breathwork, the resulting soundscape injects movement and vitality into the dialogue-driven structure of the film. Of the music, composer HILDUR GUÐNADÓTTIR says, “Hedda Gabler is one of the juiciest female characters written in the last century, so it was a real joy to synch my teeth into her story with Nia and the cast. Nia and I wanted the score to have energy and driving force, and to feel a sense of the music being in the party where the film takes place. We wrote the song ‘Stolen Tale’ together, which serves both as the love theme and party music played by the live jazz band. The song leads us through the emotional arch of the story.”
About HEDDA: A provocative reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s classic play, Hedda follows enigmatic newlywed Hedda (Tessa Thompson), who is outwardly composed but hiding a simmering discontent that threatens to explode when the brilliant and charismatic Eileen Lovberg (Nina Hoss) reenters her life. Over the course of a raucous party, the high and low of society endure the consequences of this dangerous and unknowable woman yearning for a past love. What ensues is a ruthless game of manipulation, where lust, jealousy, and betrayal collide. Written and directed by Nia DaCosta, Hedda is a daring exploration of power, desire, and a woman’s refusal to be confined.
Arriving alongside the Original Score is an EP produced by Hildur Guðnadóttir featuring cover versions of popular jazz classics from the period heard within the film and performed by the cast – listen here. Hedda is now available in select theaters and will make its worldwide debut exclusively on Prime Video next Wednesday, October 29

BALLAD OF A SMALL PLAYER (Soundtrack From The Netflix Original Film), is available everywhere now. Academy Award® winning composer Volker Bertelmann (ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT, A HOUSE OF  DYNAMITE, CONCLAVE) brings his signature blend of emotional depth, precision, and sonic experimentation to BALLAD OF A SMALL PLAYER, from Academy Award® winning director Edward Berger. ForBallad of a Small Player, Volker Bertelmann weaves an evocative and atmospheric score that mirrors the film’s journey of memory, loss, and redemption. Drawing on delicate piano motifs, textured strings, and haunting ambient layers, he creates a sound world that feels both intimate and otherworldly. The music drifts between melancholy and mystery, reflecting the emotional dissonance of the story’s characters as they navigate the blurred lines of the film’s themes. The result is a deeply human score, restrained yet resonant, that captures the poetic stillness and emotional undercurrents at the heart of BALLAD OF A SMALL PLAYER. BERTELMANN notes, “Edward Berger is a wonderful partner. Working with him on every film is a new challenge, and I love that approach. The opportunity to compose a bold, melodic film score was based on a very powerful and operatic piece by componist Antonín Leopold Dvo?ák that Edward heard, which set the direction for the score.”
ABOUT BALLAD OF A SMALL PLAYER: Lord Doyle (Colin Farrell) is laying low in Macau – spending his days and nights on the casino floors, drinking heavily and gambling what little money he has left. Struggling to keep up with his fast-rising debts, he is offered a lifeline by the mysterious Dao Ming (Fala Chen), a casino employee with secrets of her own. However, in hot pursuit is Cynthia Blithe (Tilda Swinton) – a private investigator ready to confront Doyle with what he is running from. As Doyle tries to climb to salvation, the confines of reality start to close in.

Lakeshore Records has released THE DEVIL IN DISGUISE: JOHN WAYNE GACY Original Series Soundtrack - Music by Leopold Ross & Nick Chuba. All 8 episodes of the series starring Michael Chernus are streaming now on Peacock. Ross and Chuba excel at creating distinctive and strikingly ominous soundscapes. Two cellists, Hillary Smith and Mauro Basilio, collaborated with the endlessly creative composers and they created both atmospherically mournful and quaveringly tense backdrops to the series that explores all facets involved in the horrific actions of a serial killer and the collateral damage left in his wake. Note Ross and Chuba: “In creating the score for DEVIL IN DISGUISE our starting and ending place was the cello. We worked with two cellists named Hillary Smith and Mauro Basilio to achieve a sound that both highlights the tragedy of the victim’s perspective and the horror of the crimes committed. Hillary's lyrical playing was a perfect fit for the victims' families and Mauro's "prepared cello" captured the brutality of John Wayne Gacy's crimes. We used everything from motors plucking the strings to a plastic cup wedged in between the body and bridge of Mauro's cello. Combining electronic processing with a live string section we were able to place these two amazing cellists front and center in our score.”
From 1972-1978, thirty-three young men were kidnapped, murdered and buried in a crawl space beneath their killer's house. And no one was the wiser. Not for all those years. Why? He was charming and funny. Had a good, All-American job. He was a community leader. He even volunteered to entertain sick kids...while dressed as a clown. DEVIL IN DISGUISE: JOHN WAYNE GACY peels back the twisted layers of Gacy’s life while weaving in heartrending stories of his victims; exploring the grief, guilt, and trauma of their families and friends; and exposing the systemic failures, missed opportunities and societal prejudices that fueled his reign of terror.
All 8 episodes of the series are streaming now on Peacock.

Arriving only in theaters October 24, 2025, Milan Records has released SPRINGSTEEN: DELIVER ME FROM NOWHERE (Original Motion Picture Score) with music by multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and composer Jeremiah Fraites of The Lumineers. Available everywhere now, the album features original score music crafted by Fraites for the biographical film surrounding the making of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 seminal album Nebraska. Rather than try to imitate Springsteen’s singular sound within the score, Fraites wanted to capture the raw emotionality at the heart of the film. To do so, he relied primarily on a weathered upright piano as the basis for his compositions, building upon its rich sound with layers of warm synthwork and sweeping orchestral movements. The result is a delicately moving yet stirring body of music that complements the intimate, unfiltered portrait of Springsteen on the cusp of global superstardom. Of the score, Jeremiah Fraites says, “Scoring this film felt like fate. Most of the music was written on an old upright piano that was nearly thrown away 30+ years ago—until my mom, Kathy, rescued it and brought it to our home in New Jersey. It’s the same piano where I first taught myself to play. We call it Firewood—a nickname from my piano tuner, who once joked it was only good for burning. That ‘imperfect’ piano became the soul of this score. I wanted its rawness to echo the authenticity Scott Cooper achieved for this film. I even went as far as to run some of my cues and audio through a TEAC-144, the same recorder Springsteen used on Nebraska, as a nod to Bruce’s vision and legacy.”
About SPRINGSTEEN: DELIVER ME FROM NOWHERE: From 20th Century Studios, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere chronicles the making of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 Nebraska album when he was a young musician on the cusp of global superstardom, struggling to reconcile the pressures of success with the ghosts of his past. Recorded on a 4-track recorder in Springsteen’s New Jersey bedroom, the album marked a pivotal time in his life and is considered one of his most enduring works—a raw, haunted acoustic record populated by lost souls searching for a reason to believe.

MovieScore Media is excited to be working on the soundtrack release for the US indie sci-fi film, XENO – a darker, more monstrous update to the classic E.T. formula for a new generation. Composer Ryan Taubert [CODE 8 (2019), BLOCKBUSTER (2019) and KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD (2017)] has written a truly great orchestral score where mystery meets awe, alienation meets friendship, science meets fiction and emotional involvement meets sacrifice. The film hit theaters nationwide last September; the first digital single will be out in a short while, with the full MovieScore Media album coming later! Synopsis: A teenager makes a terrifying extraterrestrial with her friend after it crashes nearby in the desert. The youngster manages to deal with her sad mother and the mother's violent boyfriend while simultaneously protecting her dangerous new buddy. Watch the trailer:

Lakeshore Records has released HALLOW ROAD—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally, on October 31 with an original score by composers Lorne Balfe (Mission: Impossible—Fallout, Black Widow), and Peter Adams (Survive, Going All the Way).  The score utilizes synths, strings and layered woodwinds to create a dark and atmospheric backdrop to the horror thriller. The composers also take inspiration from Depeche Mode’s 1987 song “Behind The Wheel” in both a slow and haunting version that showcases a ghostly muted choir as well as creating six more tracks that are menacing variations on the song.  The XYZ film is back in theaters this weekend in a special double feature with VINCENT MUST DIE. Synopsis: Two parents receive a distressing late-night call from their teenage daughter, who has just accidentally hit a pedestrian. They jump in their car, racing to get there before anyone else stumbles across the scene. As they head deeper into the night, disturbing revelations threaten to tear the family apart.  They soon realize they are not the only ones driving down Hallow Road.
Note Balfe and Adams: “Babak Anvari had a very clear and inspired vision for the film — he wanted the music to feel deeply textural and atmospheric. We explored this by recording solo woodwinds and transforming them into haunting, layered soundscapes that mirror the film’s tension and setting in the woods. Reimagining Depeche Mode’s ‘Behind the Wheel’ for the track titled ‘Come to Terms,’ on the soundtrack was a highlight — blending choir, orchestra, and electronics into something haunting and darkly beautiful.”

MovieScore Media offers the soundtrack to BAGHDAD MESSI by composer Frédéric Vercheval. It is the original score from the 2023 drama feature film directed by Sahim Omar Kalifa, starring Ahmed Mohammed Abdullah, Atheer Adel and Zahraa Ghandour, produced by A Team Productions, 10.80 Films, Column Film and Mitos Film, and released by The Searchers (Belgium). THE STORY: In war-torn Iraq, a ten-year-old boy with a crippling injury has an unquenchable passion for football. THE SCORE: Baghdad Messi‘s music is a journey into the heart of Hamoudi’s feelings, this passionate young boy whose innocence and dreams are shattered by the violence of men. Our goal with director Sahim Omar Kalifa was to capture this contrast between the harshness of war and the resilience of childhood. The musical narrative, through its contrasts marked by the gentleness of the strings, the poetry of the duduk and oud, and the rhythmic percussion, takes us on a journey into the heart of Hamoudi’s emotions. The score, with its broad, Eastern influences, represents landscapes, the desert, the heat, but also the innocence of childhood, loss, mourning, and love. It was a truly international experience, recorded in Budapest with the magnificent Hungarian Studio Orchestra and in Brussels for the solo instruments. I had the immense privilege of collaborating with exceptional musicians. Vardan Hovanissian’s duduk soars above the whole, creating a link between the landscapes and the characters. Tristan Driessens’ oud, sometimes rhythmic, sometimes melodic, punctuates the narrative. These instruments converse with the depth of the strings, which convey innocence, love, but also grief. At times, percussion and darker textures recall the reality of an endless conflict. It is music about loss, but above all, about the unwavering hope that persists at the heart of the tragedy.” – Frédéric Vercheval.
THE COMPOSER: Frédéric Vercheval was born in Brussels, Belgium. Frédéric has composed the soundtracks for multiple feature films and has worked with Oscar-winning directors such as Bille August and Agnieszka Holland.  He is president of the Belgian Screen Composer Guild. Frédéric Vercheval was nominated for the Magritte du cinéma for Best Original Score five times for Diamant 13, Krach, Pas son genre, Melody and Chez Nous. His soundtrack for the film Duelles won a World Soundtrack Award in 2019 and a Magritte du Cinema for best original score in 2020. MovieScore Media released his scores for The PactLes volets verts and Green Border.

The Original Soundtrack for the poignant, beautiful and critically acclaimed film MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE, scored by Dan Romer is out today, Nov 7th 2025, on all digital platforms via Drawing Number One Records. The soundtrack is comprised of 12 original score cues and an original song and collaboration between Dan Romer & singer-songwriter Kaia Kater “Beautiful Ruin.”
Said Composer Dan Romer on the score & song: For My Dead Friend Zoe, our goal was to make the score feel as though it were heard through the lens of memory. The story is ultimately about Merit’s relationship with, and memories of, Zoe - so we wanted every piece of music to inhabit that same fragile, dreamlike space where memory and emotion blur together. We leaned into an ambient, floating sonic world, often avoiding strict rhythm so the music could drift between past and present. When rhythm did emerge, it was entirely sourced from the military’s aural landscape — the metallic clink of dog tags, the chop of helicopter blades, and the echo of artillery fire — all sampled, processed, and transformed into organic percussion. These sounds became the heartbeat of Zoe’s world without ever feeling literal. For the end-credits sequence, we knew we needed something truly special. When Kaia joined the project, we layered her voice over the existing score, weaving it seamlessly into the film’s memoryscape. Her vocals became an extension of the sonic language — both human and haunting — turning the music into a living echo of Zoe herself.
Kaia Kater on “Beautiful Ruin:” Working with Dan Romer on the song 'Beautiful Ruin' was an absolute joy. Through our conversations with writer/director Kyle Hausmann-Stokes, we wanted to write a song that both acknowledges the intense grief of Merit's PTSD, while also highlighting the beauty and lifeblood of her deep friendship with Zoe. Dan and I went back and forth on melodies and lyrics, eventually landing on a quietly hopeful tone: lately I’ve been thinking of starting a garden/watching it grow/breathing, letting you go.

Milan Records today releases the first of new music from Apple TV’s highly anticipated drama PLURIBUS, the new science fiction series from Breaking Bad creator and Better Call Saul co-creator Vince Gilligan. Available everywhere now is the series’ main title theme by acclaimed composer Dave Porter as well as an original cover by Turkish singer Murat Evgin of “Nobody Told Me” written by John Lennon. The project reunites creator Vince Gilligan with composer Dave Porter and music supervisor Thomas Golubi? following their creative collaborations on both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. For the project, Thomas Golubi? was tasked with sourcing a series of cross-cultural covers and songs performed by artists from across the globe, with each song serving as distinct episodic end credit themes. Today’s release will be followed by a series of individual single releases for the featured songs as well as two albums of score music by Dave Porter. Starring Rhea Seehorn, who earned two Emmy nominations for her acclaimed performance in Better Call Saul, Pluribus makes its global debut on Apple TV today, with its first two episodes available now – watch here.
Of the series’ music, VINCE GILLIGAN says, “Having collaborated with them now for nearly two decades, Dave Porter and Thomas Golubi? continue to surprise and delight me. Their artistry increases each year, as does their enthusiasm. I can’t imagine doing a show without them. When we started talking about Pluribus, we knew it would have a global scope. But how could we express that musically? Apple TV, God bless them, encouraged us to take bigger swings than we’d ever taken before. For the first time, Dave was able to have his compositions performed by a symphony orchestra and full choir. And Thomas was able to commission the creation of songs by artists all over the world. What a step up that is from only being able to license existing recordings! Apple’s generosity has been put to magnificent use. I couldn’t be more impressed by Dave’s and Thomas’ efforts this season. It may be their best work yet, and I’m excited for you to hear it."
Of the score, composer DAVE PORTER says, “I’ve been so fortunate to collaborate with Vince Gilligan on all of his incredible projects, but Pluribus is special in that it is the first time since the pilot of Breaking Bad that we’ve had the opportunity to create an entirely new world to explore.  For me, this was an exciting chance to take all that we have learned working together down to the studs and create an entirely new musical landscape that is uniquely Pluribus.” Meanwhile, speaking of the series’ featured songs, music supervisor THOMAS GOLUBI? says, “Creating international covers of recognizable pop songs was our idea for the closing of each episode of Pluribus. Once we explored the concepts in the series and saw a parallel to themes of revolution and enlightenment in the counter-culture anthems from the late 1960s and 1970s, music coordinator Olivia Schlichting and I reached out to some of our favorite non-English language artists and paired them with songs that resonated creatively. We are delighted with these very unique and inspired interpretations and are excited for our audience to discover them with each episode.”
Finally, MURAT EVGIN says of his cover, “As a kid who had The Beatles posters on his walls in late ‘80s, I’d never have imagined that one day I’d sing a John Lennon song in Turkish and hear it in Vince Gilligan’s show thanks to Thomas Golubi?. It was a big responsibility to translate the lyrics of my childhood hero into Turkish and joy to add ethnic instruments from my country to ‘Nobody Told Me.’ I guess life is really what happens to us while we’re busy making other plans, as John once said.
ABOUT PLURIBUS: Pluribus is a genre-bending original in which the most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness. In addition to Rhea Seehorn, the series stars Karolina Wydra (Sneaky Pete) and Carlos-Manuel Vesga (The Hijacking of Flight 601), and guest stars Miriam Shor (American Fiction) and Samba Schutte (Our Flag Means Death). Pluribus is produced for Apple TV by Sony Pictures Television and executive produced by Emmy Award winner Vince Gilligan alongside WGA Award winner Gordon Smith, Alison Tatlock, Diane Mercer, Allyce Ozarski and Jeff Frost. Jenn Carroll and Trina Siopy serve as co-executive producers.

An exciting twist on classic Star Trek, season three takes characters both new and beloved, to new heights and dives into thrilling adventures of faith, duty, romance, comedy and mystery with varying genres never before seen on any other Star Trek.
Notes Melumad: “One of the things I love most about Strange New Worlds is how boldly it moves through different genres. This season, we boldly go from comedy to documentary, romance to war, mystery to adventure, and these intimate moments of friendship, each calling for a unique musical approach. At the same time, I get to honor the rich legacy and emotional continuity of Star Trek while exploring new sounds, textures, and an extended orchestral palette. I’m also profoundly grateful to my incredible team and musicians, whose talent and dedication make bringing this music to life possible.”

Lakeshore Records has released ALL HER FAULT—Original Series Soundtrack digitally today, November 7, with an original score by five-time Emmy winning composer Jeff Beal (House of Cards). Beal’s orchestral score augmented with electronic flourishes and piano creates an ever dark and ominous backdrop to the high-tension suburban-thriller series adapted from the best-selling novel of the same name by Andrea Mara. All episodes of the series are streaming now on Peacock. Notes Beal: “A mystery/thriller combined with smart and rich character portrayals gave me a wealth of dramatic material to navigate. The show is about trust, secrets, lies, friendship, and ultimately the emotional toll of parenthood. I used many colors from my work in this score, especially a string orchestra, electronics, solo piano, and a boy soprano to create music to mirror this tense and personal world. While often intimate in scale, there was often a sense of the operatic in the size of the emotional scope of this unique story.”
Synopsis: Marissa Irvine arrives to collect her young son Milo from his first playdate, but the woman who answers the door isn't a mother she recognizes. She doesn't have Milo and has never heard of him. As every parent's worst nightmare begins to unfold, new questions lead to deep secrets, revealing cracks in the Irvine's seemingly perfect world until everything is left shattered.
The series stars Sarah Snook (Succession), Jake Lacy (The White Lotus), Dakota Fanning (The Watchers), Michael Peña (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), Sophia Lillis (Asteroid City), Abby Elliott (The Bear), Daniel Monks (Kaos), Jay Ellis (Insecure), Thomas Cocquerel (The Gilded Age), Duke McCloud, and Kartiah Vergara.

Something to wait for: Composer Ilan Eshkeri’s ‘Space Station Earth’ is a genre-defying audio-visual experience which offers the opportunity to see the world through the eyes of an astronaut. A collaboration between the BAFTA and Emmy-nominated composer and the European Space Agency, ‘Space Station Earth’ is now set to embark upon a UK tour in 2026 after wowing audiences during a sold-out premiere at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2022. The live dates will kick off in Glasgow on 28th May 2026 and will include London, Birmingham and Manchester. ‘Space Station Earth’ invites audiences to feel the wonder, fragility, and unity of our planet — bringing to life, through music and imagery, the awe of seeing Earth from space. Whether you are a space enthusiast, care about the planet, a concert goer, a cinema music fan, or an immersive experience seeker, this show will allow you to experience the planet as you’ve never seen it before. ‘Space Station Earth’ is an immersive event which unites evocative, atmospheric and emotional music performed by a synth-pop band, an orchestra and a choir with huge screen, high-definition footage filmed by astronauts from the International Space Station. The show takes audiences on the profoundly moving journey of astronauts travelling to the space station – a journey that astronauts find hard to describe. It’s presented through a visionary blend of music, science, and cinema. Many live events promise to offer something unique, but this truly does - an opportunity to capture the feeling of The Overview Effect: the profound awe astronauts feel when viewing the Earth from orbit. The ‘Space Station Earth’ concept was inspired by Ilan Eshkeri’s friendship with astronaut Tim Peake, who is a fan of his music and praised the show’s ability “to capture the emotion of human spaceflight and exploration.” Eshkeri further explored the idea in-depth with his acclaimed accompanying album which can be heard HERE. Ilan Eshkeri says, “Human spaceflight will be at the forefront of public consciousness in 2026, with the planned Artemis II mission taking humans back to the moon. This created the perfect opportunity to bring back ‘Space Station Earth’ to give audiences the opportunity to see through the eyes of an astronaut.”
The ‘Space Station Earth’ tour dates are below. Tickets go on general sale at 10am, on Friday, October 17th here.

Non Film Music Works by Film Composers

Via Mikael Carlsson: A while ago, composer Stephen Edwards approached me with an unusual idea. He had re-imagined his Requiem For My Mother into a large work for orchestra and solo piano and was looking for a way to make it relevant to a new audience. We discussed various options, and I came up with the idea to anchor this very heartfelt, hopeful and utterly beautiful work to the devastating state of war on many parts of our world. So, Prayer for Peace: Serenade for Piano and Orchestra was born. Stephen had recorded the piano part himself on his Steinway before the piano and Stephen’s studio were destroyed in the 1/7/25 fires, dubbed over the orchestral recording made by the City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra for the original Requiem recording. We renamed each movement, and this is the Pie Jesu which became Pious,  our first single from the full-length album coming out soon on my classical music label, Mother Goose Recordings. I hope that you will find this music as comforting as I did. I did the additional mixing, mastering and artwork. Thanks, Stephen, for entrusting me with this special project.”

Raphaël Gesqua reports an announcement that’s particularly close to his heart. Almost 35 years ago, I began my video game career, after an already fulfilling career in the demo scene. My professional debut, in the glorious era of 16-bit consoles and microcomputers, introduced me to a technological gem: the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, which allowed Pierre Adane, @Philippe Dessoly, and myself to bring to life the magical world of a certain Mr. Nutz. Today, 32 years later, I'm back on this machine for an exciting project initiated by my friend Hedge, who asked me a few months ago to participate in the creation of a new, ultra-ambitious game for the system, ETERNAL HUNTERS: THE BRANFORD LEGACY, and to compose the music and sound design. The project was just announced, via its first teaser, during the unmissable @hedg convention.
A Kickstarter campaign will also be launched very shortly, so you'll have more news very soon.

Waxwork Records presents the deluxe vinyl release of BUGONIA Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by Jerskin Fendrix on 180-Gram Black, old-style tip on gatefold jackets with built in pages, artwork and design by Vasilis Marmatakis, and inserted newsprint posters. The album is the latest in an ongoing creative partnership between Fendrix and Bugonia director Yorgos Lanthimos following their work together on the director’s previous two films, POOR THINGS and KINDS OF KINDNESS. Similar to their workflow on Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness, Fendrix and Lanthimos began their third collaboration prior to the film’s production, with Fendrix recording much of the music based solely on conversations with the director as a guide. “For Bugonia, Yorgos did not allow me to see the script, or know anything about the film apart from the three words ‘Bees,’ ‘Basement’ & ‘Spaceship,’” recalls Fendrix of the process. “All of the music is derived from my research on these three areas and seeing how much connective tissue they might have, mainly in a structural/systemic/geometric sense and in regard to some ideas about altitudes. Decided early on, however, was the idea to utilize a symphony orchestra throughout the score, prompting a two-day recording session with the London Contemporary Orchestra at the legendary Air Studios with Fendrix conducting. “It was a 90-piece orchestra in one room, which is a very big sound,” Fendrix says. “And they’re up for playing around, they're up for experimenting, they're up for embarrassing themselves musically, which not a lot of orchestras are. So being able to play with an orchestra that has that standard, but also that flexibility, which I was able to draw some more unusual, more provocative sounds out of, was an absolute joy.”
BUGONIA Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Features:

  • Music by Jerskin Fendrix (Poor Things, Kinds Of Kindness)
  • 180-Gram Black Vinyl
  • Design by Vasilis Maramtakis
  • Old-Style Tip On Gatefold Jackets with Built In Pages
  • Inserted Newspaper Print Posters
